How I use Journaling for Goal Setting & More
For as long as I can remember, I have journaled.
As a kid, I used a diary to keep all my "secrets", and as I grew older I started to dive into journaling with a deeper purpose to get me through school goals, social drama and staying organized.
Fast forward to when I became a mom and journaling was now about clearing my mind from all the chaos, staying in tune with my identity before motherhood, what I wanted to do better as a mom and how I saw my life.
Now as I add building a brand to my plate, I journal to help me plan ahead, gain clarity on my desires, and stay focused on my goals outside of motherhood.
In this blog post, I'm sharing the 3 ways Journaling with intention has helped me grow my brand, work on myself, and even become a better mom. I’ll be talking about:
- How I'm more clear on what I want out of entrepreneurship
- How I've broken bad habits
- The most important traits to me in motherhood
If you're tired of feeling like your mind is always overwhelmed, you don't know where to start in your journey to entrepreneurship, how to self identify sabotaging habits or want to simply show up better as a mom, then you’re in the right place!
In case you feel like you don't have time to read the juicy details below, feel free to grab a copy of my F R E E Self-Care Journal now and come back later to read!
How I Got Clear on what I want out of Entrepreneurship
Social media does a good job at selling us a dream. When I decided I wanted to start a side hustle, I chose something near and dear to me. Blogging. Soon enough, when the doe wasn’t rolling in, “Quick enough” I ventured off into other avenues I thought would bring me the instant gratification I was looking for. Surprise, surprise .. It did not.
It wasn’t some overnight epiphany I had that made me realize I was on the wrong path either, but when I did eventually realize, using journal prompts that helped me think about why I wanted to start this journey of entrepreneurship in the first place is what kept me grounded.
I asked myself things like:
- What industry do I really want to be an entrepreneur in?
- What will entrepreneurship give me that my corporate job won’t?
- If I don’t become an entrepreneur in one year, what’s the worst that can happen? *This was juicy because it made me realize there’s no race happening here other than the one I'm creating against myself. So I took a chill pill and embraced the journey*
Once I was able to put my mind in the right place, I got back to blogging and the ventures that actually align with me and who I am. That’s when everything started to fall into place.
How I've Broken Bad Habits
Disclaimer* I’m not going to sit here and preach to you as if I don't still have bad habits, because I do. However, I’ve gotten rid of many that have helped me grow personally and professionally. Thus, I'm qualified to talk on this topic just a bit.
The number one habit I'm proud of breaking? Getting defensive. I had a terrible habit of making excuses. Anytime my fiance would give me constructive criticism I’d get defensive. Worst part is, I’d actually ask for the criticism.
Do you know what it means if you get defensive at the truth? That you aren’t ready for growth. So, inevitably you stay stagnant.
When you stay in the same place long enough, you eventually start to question why? Which I did. Knowledge of self is critical to growth and I wanted to dig deeper and get clear on why I was doing this.
So, I started taking accountability when I asked for critical feedback, and actually working on improving those areas I fell short in.
Instead of saying, “I don’t do xyz because I have all of this and all of that to take care of” I started saying, “Ok well, I can fit that in my schedule if I do xyz at this time, and the rest at that time.”
I’d then write down in my journal how important it was for me to keep this going.
Life changed a lot. I became more conscious of the free time I actually had and started prioritizing my brand more. If this sounds like you too, I hope you give it a go.
The Most Important Traits I want to have as a Mom
If there’s anything parenthood will teach you, it’s that those little eyes and ears are watching and listening at all times.
Oftentimes my kids call me a super mom, and praise me with the most beautiful affirmations. I’m so grateful for it because it reminds me I'm doing the right thing.
But, I still spend a lot of time thinking about how I can be more, not just for them but for myself too.
I decided to jot down what traits I want my kids to see of their mom at all times, I’ll share some of mine with you:
- Loyal
- Loving
- Dedicated
- Selfless
Having these written down in my journal, and constantly referring back to it helps me maintain a healthy balance between motherhood and entrepreneurship by always showing up in one of these ways for my family and my business.
In turn, my kids not only feel extra loved and want to reciprocate but are watching me commit to the things I love. It’s no accident that I'm constantly affirmed by my own children.
If all of these things are important to you, but you feel like you need some guidance on getting to the root of these thoughts I highly recommend The Self Care Journal that contains 31 thought-provoking journal prompts to help you gain clarity on your vision for entrepreneurship, habits that are no longer serving you, and motherhood.
When I started journaling with purpose and using these prompts my life drastically changed because I was becoming intentional about everything I was doing. For years I stayed stagnant in my business and my own personal development. It was this awful feeling of being fed up with myself day after day for not going after what I really wanted in life. Journaling gave me a sense of direction I couldn’t find anywhere else, and I want that for you too. If you take it seriously, and include it in your daily routine for 31 days straight, I guarantee you won’t be the same person anymore. Click here to download your free journal today!
